Carbon Monoxide Regulations

Carbon Monoxide

Carbon Monoxide alarms and smoke alarms save lives. In the unfortunate event of a fire igniting in your home and there is no smoke alarm you are putting your self at risk meaning you are four time more likely to die than if you had a working alarm.

The Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm Regulations 2015 came into effect and was approved by Parliament on the 1st October 2015. Landlords in the private sector who are renting a property has to have a minimum of one smoke alarm fitted to every floor of a property along with a carbon monoxide alarm fitted into each room where there is a fixed combustion appliance like a boiler or where a flue is routed through a bedroom or living room being a high risk area.

It is compulsory for the landlord to check each alarm to ensure it is a working condition at the beginning of each new tenancy. Local authorities will enforce these requirements and can issue to landlords fines of up to £5000 for non-compliance of remedial notices issued.

The new regulations brought in are designed to raise awareness to the risk and dangers of carbon monoxide or CO so as protecting tenants, homeowners and families from suffering the effects.
